Jones takes UNC to the Slammer

Former High School All-American Marcus Jones hit a grand slam and drove in five runs from the 8-spot to propel NC State past UNC 11-1 Friday night. Coming in to the game, Marcus had only 3 HRsmjonesslam.jpg in 116 ABs this season. Jones was mainly a backup outfielder, pinch-runner and late-inning defensive replacement last season, starting only six games. Now a sophomore, Jones is the primary CF (only 1 error in 80 chances) and is top three on the team for sac flies and sac bunts. As for the rest of the team, 2B Dallas Poulk went 4-4 raising his season BA to an impressive .396; he also scored 3 and drove in 3. First baseman Pat Ferguson went 4-4 and scored 3 runs. RF Ryan Pond went 3-4 scoring 3 runs. On the mound, Eric Surkamp scattered 8 hits in 7 innings, allowing only 1 run to score. Andrew Taylor and Jake Kensmoe combined to retire all 6 batters they faced in the final two innings. The loss was Carowhina's worst since March of 2006.
